Great Christmas Songs, Part 4

This one is just great for so many reasons. Are Bowie and Bing Crosby not hilariously amazing together in the preamble bit? Yes, they are. And it’s a really beautiful song.

Also! Bing Crosby totally reminds me of my grandfather, which makes me happy. Not because he looks like him — in fact, my grandfather actually bore a striking resemblance to Jimmy Stewart (so much so that he was once chased through a train station by a flock of women who thought that’s who he was) — but because one of his favourite movies was ‘High Society’ (a remake of ‘The Philadelphia Story’) starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. I used to watch it so often with him when I was a kid that now just hearing Bing Crosby’s voice reminds me of him. Which is great!

Great Christmas Songs, Part 3

This isn’t technically a Christmas song per se, but it always makes me think of Christmas…especially this version by Johnny Cash. I really just think that ‘Amazing Grace’ is one of the prettiest songs ever.

The Elvis version is pretty Christmas-y as well:

Great Christmas Songs, Part 2

Today’s song is ‘A Change at Christmas (Say It Isn’t So)’ by the Flaming Lips.

This is kind of a sad song. Last weekend I decided to sit down and write some Christmas cards, so I made myself a cup of cocoa and put on some Christmas records to get into the spirit of things. I am not gonna lie to you guys — when this song came on, I totally cried. That is sappy, I know — but the lyrics are quite wistful. But also very hopeful, I think! So it was kind of a bittersweet moment, if you know what I mean? Anyway, this is one of my favourite Christmas songs because it makes me think about what is possible, and the idea of people being nice to one another and everyone getting along. Maybe that sounds idealistic — but I ask you, what better time than Christmas for idealism? That is what it’s all about, my friends.

Great Christmas Songs, Part 1

Okay. It’s that time of year again — no matter where you go, people are busting out the Christmas songs and carols. I, for one, love it. I am a huge fan of Christmas carolling, which will probably surprise some of you who know me, but it’s true!

Traditional carols are great, but there have also been some pretty excellent Christmas pop songs produced over the years. Over the next few days I will be sharing with you some of my favourites.

First up is Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’. This is possibly one of the cheesiest songs ever recorded, but I love it! Not in small part because of the RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING video:

Like, seriously. Everyone looks so amazingly, perfectly ’80s here that it is kind of blowing my mind. For example, these dudes:

And George Michael’s lady friend’s entire ensemble is pretty fantastic:

so '80s

As are these stellar ski goggles:

Ah, the ’80s!

Also, this image of George Michael in the fur hood is kind of making my life:

And the ‘smoldering’ look he gives the girl during the dinner scene kills me:

That is some fine acting work there, my friends.

In summary, I am choosing this as one of my fav Christmas songs because it hearkens back to a magical era known as the ’80s, when both women and men alike had feathered hair and wore day-glo colours and oversized shoulder pads, even in their ski coats! At Christmas time, it’s nice to be reminded of these halcyon days of yore…
